Are you a grandparent? Are you aware that grandparents play an important role in their grandchildren’s lives? Whether you feel too young or too old to be a grandparent, your role is a special responsibility and a blessing from God.

This article will help you understand how to love your grandchildren God’s way, experience the joy of becoming a grandparent, and fulfill your calling in this sacred relationship.

Becoming Grandparents

When you first heard that you would become a grandparent, you probably thought about all the wonderful things you wanted to do for your grandchild, the gifts, the hugs, the laughter, and the memories you would create. But have you also stopped to consider what God wants you to do as a grandparent?

Many grandparents are lovingly accused of spoiling their grandchildren, and in many cases, it is true. The joy of being a grandparent is deep and fulfilling. We love to see their faces light up when we surprise them or spend time together. Yet, we must remember that we are not their parents. There are moments when grandparents need to be in agreement with the parents before making certain decisions. Balance and unity bring peace and respect within the family.

The Joy of Being a Grandmother

The story of Naomi and her grandson Obed beautifully illustrates the joy that grandchildren bring.

In the book of Ruth, Naomi faced deep loss when her husband and two sons died. One daughter-in-law returned to her family, but Ruth remained with Naomi out of love and loyalty. Ruth said, “Where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God” (Ruth 1:16–17). Read more here.

Ruth’s faithfulness led to a great blessing. She married Boaz, and they had a son named Obed. Naomi cared for him as her own, and her joy was restored. God turned Naomi’s sorrow into gladness through the birth of her grandson. This story reminds us that God can use grandchildren to bring healing, joy, and hope into our lives.

As grandparents, we are to love, care for, and help nurture our grandchildren in the Word of God, building up their faith as Naomi did.

A Grandmother of Faith

The Bible highlights another grandmother of faith, Lois, the grandmother of Timothy.

Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 1:5, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

Lois passed her faith to her daughter and grandson, leaving a spiritual legacy. Grandparents are called to do the same, teaching each generation to trust in God. This is a vital part of loving your grandchildren God’s way.

The Role of Grandparents

Grandparents play an important spiritual role. It’s not just about giving gifts but about teaching grandchildren how to love and trust God. Teach them how to pray, read the Word, and walk in obedience. Live a godly and righteous life before them so that they may follow your example. When we see our children and grandchildren walking with the Lord, our hearts are filled with joy, knowing our labor is not in vain.

Deuteronomy 6:5–9 reminds us to teach God’s commandments diligently to our children and grandchildren, to talk about them daily, and to make our homes places where His truth is seen and heard.

Grandfathers as Examples

The Bible also gives examples of faithful grandfathers. Enoch was the great-grandfather of Noah. Genesis 5:21–32 tells us that Enoch walked with God, and God took him. His faith and obedience influenced the generations that followed. Through his family line came Noah, who found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel, was another example. After years of thinking his son Joseph was dead, he was reunited with him and met his grandsons, Manasseh and Ephraim. Jacob blessed them as his own sons. His love and faith became a testimony for his entire family.

These men show how a godly legacy can pass through generations when grandparents walk closely with God.

Sacrifices Grandparents Should Make

Loving your grandchildren God’s way often requires sacrifice. Some sacrifices include:

  1. Giving your time and attention even when you are tired.

  2. Praying consistently for their spiritual growth and protection.

  3. Supporting their parents with wisdom and respect.

  4. Setting aside personal desires to spend meaningful time together.

  5. Guiding them gently without overstepping parental boundaries.

  6. Being patient when they make mistakes.

  7. Sharing biblical wisdom, not just opinions.

  8. Being generous with forgiveness and encouragement.

Through these sacrifices, grandparents reflect God’s love and patience toward His children.

How God Cares for Children

Jesus made it clear how deeply God cares for little ones.

In Matthew 19:14, Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Children are precious in God’s sight. They are a gift and a trust from Him, as Psalm 127:3 says, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him.”

As grandparents, we share in that divine care, showing love, patience, and godly instruction that helps them grow into the people God created them to be.

Ten Ways to Love Your Grandchildren God’s Way

  1. Pray for them daily. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

  2. Teach them God’s Word. (Deuteronomy 6:7)

  3. Model faith through your actions. (James 2:17)

  4. Encourage them to obey their parents. (Ephesians 6:1)

  5. Listen with patience and understanding. (Proverbs 18:13)

  6. Speak blessings over their lives. (Numbers 6:24–26)

  7. Correct with love and gentleness. (Proverbs 13:24)

  8. Celebrate their milestones with gratitude to God. (Psalm 100:4)

  9. Create lasting memories that glorify God. (Psalm 145:4)

  10. Remind them often that they are deeply loved by you and by God. (Jeremiah 31:3)

A Prayer of Encouragement

Heavenly Father, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray for every grandparent and grandchild reading this message. Help each grandparent to walk in love, faith, and wisdom. Strengthen them to be godly examples to their grandchildren. Bless the grandchildren to grow in grace, truth, and obedience to You. Protect them from harm and from every evil plan of the enemy. Let Your love and Spirit dwell in every family. We thank You for the gift of children and grandchildren. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
