In Walk With God Magazine, we share the remarkable story of Martha Sani — a woman whose curiosity to learn sign language quickly became a divine calling.

What began as curiosity soon became a calling for Martha Sani. As a child, she loved learning new things, especially languages. But two months into studying sign language, she discovered its deeper purpose.
One Sunday, when the interpreter was absent at church, about 20 hearing-impaired members were left without anyone to help. Martha walked up to the podium and began interpreting. “They were stunned and happy to have someone step in. My heart for service led me there,” she recalls.
From that day, her journey expanded from learning words to transforming lives. Parents who once hid their children due to stigma began proudly bringing them to church and school.
For them, Martha became more than an interpreter; she was a counselor, mediator, and mentor. Through her work, families experienced healing, inclusion, and the assurance that their children had value.
It is a story that reminds us that serving God often begins in small steps, but with purpose, those steps can change lives.
Martha’s story reminds us that communication is more than speech. Communication is a pathway to love, dignity, and inclusion. The ability to connect across barriers, whether through a new language or the language of compassion, is central to advancing God’s Kingdom.
Learning sign language, in particular, offers believers a profound way to serve. It not only bridges communication gaps but also restores value to individuals and families who often feel forgotten. In a noisy world, choosing to learn another’s language says, “You matter. I see you. You are not alone.”
For the body of Christ, good communication is discipleship in action. It is listening, interpreting, and meeting people where they are. When we take time to learn new ways of expressing God’s love, whether through words, signs, or presence, we embody Christ, who Himself became the Word made flesh.
